Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry

Confidential, Personalized Treatment in Harvard Square

I am a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist with over a decade of experience in providing psychodynamic psychotherapy and medication management for challenges with emotion regulation, depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, work and relationship problems, and life transitions. My approach is grounded in the findings of contemporary infant mental health and attachment research, which emphasizes neuroplasticity and the role of relationships in changing the brain.

I understand that finding a therapist is difficult. I believe that different psychotherapy modalities have more in common than we may initially appreciate. People usually seek therapy for overwhelming worry, sadness, anger, emptiness, or simply a feeling of being stuck. This suffering can feel like having no "emotional skin," or a limited ability to be with and cope with strong emotions. Oftentimes, people look for therapy because of trouble feeling good about their behavior and their capacity for close relationships.

Therapy helps people to function with more skillful coping and problem solving in everyday life. With time, therapy also addresses the habitual ways of thinking about ourselves and our relationships. Many of these feelings and patterns of thinking were established early in life and are therefore outside of our awareness. Learning about these underlying beliefs mobilizes a powerful force for change.

Talk therapy creates new ways of thinking and behaving, within the context of a safe relationship, so that change actually happens. This profound process reactivates development. This learning changes the brain.

As a former staff psychiatrist at the nation's top psychiatric hospital, McLean Hospital / Harvard Medical School, I have expertise in working with individuals and families who are seeking compassionate, confidential, evidence-based, and nuanced treatment for their emotional pain and suffering. I have extensive experience working with college students, graduate and medical students, professors, physicians and healthcare professionals, executives, lawyers, writers, artists, government officials, and business and biotech leaders. I invite you to reach out and take this first step toward healing.

Services

Initial Consultation

After taking the first step to reach out for help, I offer a supportive environment to explore what's bothering you and how we can help you move forward. I work with individuals of all ages, and their families. Our first meeting will be a comprehensive review of your concerns, goals, and past issues. We will formulate a treatment plan together.

Medication Management

Medications may be desired or indicated. Alternatively, some people wish to taper and discontinue their psychiatric medications. I have expertise in psychopharmacology and previously provided expert second opinion consultations throughout McLean Hospital. I typically meet with patients monthly or every few months to monitor response to medications.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

This form of psychotherapy works to get to the root of your problems to change unproductive patterns of thinking and relating to others. I meet with patients weekly or several times weekly to deepen this process within the context of a warm, supportive relationship. I may also recommend working with you on coping skills and dialectical behavior therapy skills.

Parent Consultation

I work with parents to better understand and help their struggling child or adult child. I believe the family often has more wisdom than an outside "expert." I will listen closely and support your own development to be the best parent you can be.

Play Therapy

I have experienced that children communicate their inner world through play. Children also learn and develop through play. I may recommend play therapy when developmentally indicated.

About Me

After graduating from Smith College with a bachelor's degree in English literature, I wondered about medicine as a way to further engage with the human story. I worked for some years as an EMT on 911 calls in the Boston area, and then as a case manager at a community mental health clinic. Dedicating myself to lifelong learning, I decided to go back to school to become a child psychiatrist. I completed a post-baccalaureate in premedical studies and went on to receive my MD with honors from St. George's University School of Medicine in collaboration with Northumbria University. I trained at the University of Cincinnati psychiatry residency training program and Cincinnati Children's Hospital child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship.

After completing training, I served for many years as an attending psychiatrist leading an interdisciplinary treatment team on AB2 at McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. During this time at McLean, I specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of psychotic disorders, including bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, schizophrenia, delirious mania, and catatonia. I also started my private practice in 2019.
